Batanes, the Philippines: Nightlife

Batanes is known as the place where “one whispers to God” because of its wild and windy climate. It is beautiful and green with herds of cows and goats grazing and a good way to tour it is by car or bike rental.

There is not much in the way of nighttime entertainment but you could enjoy a coffee in the Honesty Cafe, where there is no one to serve you and you serve yourself and deposit your coins in designated boxes. Here you could have a coffee from a thermos. Places to eat and enjoy a drink could be Shanedel´s Inn or Batanes Seaside Lodge or Nakabuang Arch which is famous for its lobster and rice dishes or Pinakbet, Bangus or coconut crab. Another delicacy is Bukayu or Buko juice.

Eating and drinking in Batanes is rather expensive because things are imported so factor this in your trip. The best places to go out at night in the Batanes are in Basco, the capital town. Here you could enjoy a drink in one of the hotels, there are three or four of them so for a rather deserted place with difficult access, you would be kind of spoilt for choice here. Basically, there is one bar restaurant in Basco, called Hiro´s Café which is a nice place and there are a few others such as the VL Canteen. Casa Napoli is another place where you could have some wine with your pasta Batanes style. Dats Bakery and Carinderia is an establishment serving drinks along with food.

Carl´s Canteen is a great place to get together with other travelers, even though there are not many as Batanes is not visited by mass tourism.
A nice restaurant is Kusina el Ivatan specializing in local Ivatan dishes. Meat dishes are served in Doque´s Grill House and you could also find something to eat with your drinks in Tawsen Agri-Ventures.

These are all located in the main town of Basco. Other more rural areas do not have much in the way of places to enjoy a drink in the evening or go out. Remember this is a very remote place of the Philippines.
