Ashgabat, Turkmenistan: Travel/Tourist Information Guide
Ashgabat is the capital city of Turkmenistan, surrounded by Aha Province. The city has a typical continental climate with extremely hot summer whereas the winters are rather cold. The city carries the nickname The City of White Marble.
Transportation in and around Ashgabat
There are a couple of ways by which you can get in Ashgabat. The first choice is by Plane via the Turkmenistan Airlines. It operates a number of international flights from most of the bigger countries in Europe. Another way to get in the city is by train. You can use Turkmenistan Zeleznice (Turkmendemiryollari) which runs from Turkmenbashi and Turkmenabad via Mary. You can also enter the city by car from the neighboring countries.
Once you get in Ashgabat there are also a couple of ways to get around the city. The first option is by taxi, by which everyone means hitchhiking and it is the best one. To hail a taxi hold out your arm at a downward angle with two fingers extended. First tell the driver where are you going and on;y get in the car if he nods. If not, wait for another car. This option is a totally safe one. There are also official taxis which can be found at the airport and the rail station. They are safe but more expensive. The last way to get around Ashgabat is by bus. The city gas a large network of buses. The buses are modern, air-conditioned and easily reached. They have specific stops at which you can check out a map with the routes of every bus line departing from that stop.
Ashgabat is a pretty interesting cities with a lot of things worth seeing. When it comes to museums there are a number of great ones. The National museum is a must-see. It is divided into several halls all dedicated to different eras. You could also visit the Turkmen Carpet Museum which holds antique carpets of the 18th and 19th century. In this museum, you will see the largest had-woven carpet in the world. As far as monuments go, the best one and the most important one is the Turkmenistan Independence Monument. It is located in the Turkmenistan Independence Park. If you want to do some shopping then you should visit one of the most colorful bazaars of Central Asia - the Tolkuchka Bazaar.
