Tagaytay, the Philippines: Travel/Tourist Information Guide
The city of Tagaytay, just south of Manila, rests on the volcanic island of Taal. The cool climate and fantastic scenery have propelled the city to one of the Philippines most popular tourist destinations. Tagaytay is located in the Cavite province and is an ideal place to visit at the beginning of summer. Since it is just a two hour drive away from Manila, many locals from Manila come to relax in Tagaytay for the week-end or a short holiday. On clear days, Tagaytay offers great views of Lake Taal and the multiple craters of the active Taal Volcano. The town is not very big, with a population of around 60.000 residents and a surface area of 65 sq kms, so one can see it all in a short stay and not miss anything.
There are a lot of outdoor activities to enjoy in and around Tagaytay, from hiking and horseback riding, to zip-lining and sailing. Several tours of the city and volcano are offered, either from Tagaytay, or from Manila. Specific lookout points offer the best views of the region, while parks and gardens are perfect for a picnic. There are also quite a few good restaurants and cafés to enjoy in Tagaytay and there is a good range of accommodation options, from modest to outright luxurious.
Tagaytay is about a two hour drive away from Manila and it is easily accessed by road or plane. Cable cars and funiculars make it easy to get around and see the sights, while trikes are the easiest and cheapest method of transportation within the city.
In the 18th century, the eruptions of Taal Volcano destroyed most of the island, including the towns of Taal, Lipa, Sala, Tanauan and Talisay. Tagaytay became of sanctuary for revolutionaries during the 19th century Philippine Revolution. Just a couple of decades later another eruption the island yet again, with ash fall reaching Manila. Tagaytay became a chartered city in 1938. Taal Volcano’s latest eruption in 1965 killed over 200 people. To this day the volcano remains active and quite restless posing a great threat to people living on the island.
