Muscat, Oman: Travel/Tourist Information Guide
Muscat is the largest city of Oman and its capital. It is a warm city, with very high temperatures and usually humid weather during the year. Muscat actually consists of three towns which came to grow as one: Muscat, Matrah and Ruwi.
Transportation in and around Muscat
If you are flying to Oman from Dubai or Doha you don't need a visa. Otherwise, you must acquire a visa before entering the country. There are a number of ways to get into Muscat. The best way is by plane since planes fly into Muscat from nearly all the bigger cities in Europe. Another way to get in the city is by bus which leaves from Dubai and Abu Dhabi. You can also get in Muscat by car from the UAE or from Yemen.
Once in Muscat you can get around the city by taxi. Taxis are usually colored orange and white. There are also Maxi Taxis (vans) which have specific routes. You can also rent a car from the great number of rental services to get around the city.
Muscat has a lot of places that have to be visited. The first of them are the Al Jalali Fort and the Al Mirani Fort which used to be prisons and now are museums. Another great place is the Qasr Al Alam Royal Palace which is the office of the ruler of Oman. Entrance is not allowed, but it is a beautiful palace to be seen. The world's third largest mosque is located in Muscat, called Sultan Qaboos Grand Mosque. If you want to find out more about the history of Oman you should visit the Bait az-Zubair Museum. Oman also has great wadis and the most beautiful one is the Wadi Shab. It is about 100 km from Muscat, but it is worth the travel.
