Jomsom, Nepal: Travel/Tourist Information Guide

Jomsom is a small mountain town located in the Himalayas. It is also known as Dzongsam or New Fort. The town is located at an altitude of about 2700 m in Mustang District. It extends over both the banks of the Kali Gandaki River. Along the banks of Kali Gandaki River, there are rocks that are holy to the Hindus. The town is mainly popular for being a starting/ending point for treks along the Kali Gandaki River valley as well as up to Muktinath on the Jomsom-Muktinath Trek.

Getting There

There are several ways to get to Jomsom such as by plane, by bus or on foot. Jomsom Airport is located at nearby of the town and there are daily flight connections with Pokhara. On the other hand, usually flights between them might cause delays or cancellations due to weather conditions. Airlines covering the area are Nepal Airlines, Yetti Airlines, Tara Airlines and Agni Air. Secondly, there are daily bus services operated from Pokhara to Jomsom with option to get out/in anyway on the route. The bus station is located on the southwest park of the New Jomsom. Lastly, new red ACAP trail is considered as one of the best part of Annapurna Circuit and can lead trekkers to old villages and valleys.

Sights and Activities

Jomsom Muktinath Trek

The trek allows trekkers to witness Nepal’s spectacular diversity, deep valleys and high mountains encircling the Annapurna circuit. Jomsom Muktinath is the most popular trekking region which attracts over annually more than 30.000 trekkers. The trek is the final third of the Annapurna circuit. The trekking ends to the height of 3750 m in the Muktinath Temple. The temple is one of the most sacred places to Hindus as well as to Buddhists.

Mustang Eco Museum

Mustang Eco Museum is located at the south of the town. There is a stairway leads to the Mustand Eco Museum. The museum has displays of Tibetan Herbal Medicine which is called “amchi”. It also contains a re-created Buddhist chapel. The admission fee to the museum is Rs 100. Opening hours: 10 am – 5 pm from Tuesdays to Thursdays, from Saturdays to Sundays. Till 3 pm on Fridays and Till 4 pm in the winter.
