Officially Known as Hellenic Republic, Greece is a country in southeastern Europe with a population of around 10.8 million. Athens is the capital and largest city in Greece and Thessaloniki is considered as the second largest city which is commonly denoted as the co-capital. It is located on the southern tip of the Balkan Peninsula at the crossroads of Europe, Asia and Africa. The country is surrounded by Albania in the northwest, the F.Y. Republic of Macedonia and Bulgaria in the north and Turkey in the northeast. Greece is divided in to nine geographic regions such as Macedonia, Central Greece, the Peloponnese, Thessaly, Epirus, the Aegean Islands, Thrace, Crete and the Ionian Islands.
Greece holds a rich history and is considered as the cradle of Western civilization and the homeland of democracy. Tourism plays a significant role in the economy of the country. The Aegean Sea, the Peloponnesus with antique Olympia, Athens with its Parthenon on the Acropolis and Thessaloniki are the major tourists’ spots. The major destinations in the country comprise Santorini, Mykonos, Crete, Rhodes, Corfu, Kos, Dodecanese, Kefalonia, Cyclades, Ionian Islands and Sporades islands.
