Yangon is the only city in Myanmar with rich and versatile nightlife, characterized by domestic drinks and international-style night clubs. Most of them are located on 19th Street in Chinatown, known for being a place with the most western-like clubs. Typical night-out in Yangon starts with a visit to one of many beer stations, where the most popular drinks include very cheap domestic Myanmar Beer and even cheaper Myanmar Rum, which costs around $3 per bottle.
Another feature of Yangon’s nightlife, perhaps the most popular and one to be aware of, are the ever-present “ladies of the night”. They can be found literally everywhere around the city after dark settles, and are known for being pretty pushy.
Fuse- located at Kabar Aye Pagoda Road, Bahan Township, this night club is among the most popular ones in Yangon. The club is also known for hosting some international DJs.
MBox- one of many night clubs located in local hotels; this one is located in the Yangon International Hotel. MBox has DJ nights and karaoke rooms.
Club 5- located in the basement of the Park Royal Hotel on Alan Pya Pagoda Road, Club 5 has live music by a local band every night, except on Sundays. After that, until 2am, DJs take over.
Casa Entertainment- located at Thein Gyi Zay Block D, this club has Karaoke, dancing floor, DJ machine, DJ players, and private rooms.
Pioneer- also located inside the Yangon International Hotel, Pioneer night club is more sophisticated than its neighbor, MBox. Dim lights are complemented with electro and house music, for a total western-like feeling.
Café Liberale- located on Natmauk Road, at the Tamwe Township, this club stays open until early mornings, when most others have been long closed. It has separate dance floor and bar, which is very rare in Yangon, and gives its guests a chance to have a conversation after dancing.
GTR- this club is essentially a place where one can mingle with the locals and experience their idea of a night out. It is located near the Inya Lake Hotel.
JJ Entertainment (JJs)- this popular disco and karaoke club is located in Chinatown. Beside loud music and dancing, a popular feature of this joint also includes local women. Entry fee is around $6.
7th Joint- this is the only reggae bar in Yangon, and Myanmar, for that matter. It is located in downtown Yangon, on the Mahabandoola Street.
Gekkõ- this is actually a Japanese bar/restaurant, with options for both a nice local meal and cheap local drinks. It is located on Merchant Street, in downtown Yangon.
Vista Bar- not as cheap as other bars in Yangon, but still decent place to start a night at. It is located on a rooftop on West Shwegonedaing Road, north of the Shwedagon Pagoda.
50th Street Bar- on of the oldest joints on Yangon’s night-club scene. It remains of some western bars, serving foreign drinks and having a pool table, as well as TVs for watching live sports. Entire Sunday is reserved for a happy hour. The bar is located in downtown Yangon, on the 50th Street, of course.
Union Bar and Grill- perhaps the closest thing Yangon has to the western-style restaurant/bar. It is located in downtown Yangon, on Strand Road. The menu is very rich and versatile, with both drinks and food.
Yangon Yangon- another rooftop bar with great view of the city. Located on top of the Sakura Tower, it has a great choice of drinks, including cocktails. Entry fee is $5, with one free drink. The bar also offers snacks and throws happy-hours.
The Strand Bar- located in the famous Strand Hotel, on Strand Road, this bar is all about colonial times. Drinks and snacks are complemented by relaxing atmosphere.
The Penthouse- located at Bagaya Street, this industrial chic style bar also offers a great view of the city. Great place to start the night, since it closes at 11pm.
