A weighty reason to visit Ghent is attending one of its festivals. No less than a dozen notable events celebrate the cultural life of the city throughout the year. These colorful lively festivities serve as alternative to common sightseeing tours.

The Ghent Festival is by far the most remarkable venue not only in Ghent but also in Europe. Its history dates back to the late 19th century. These days the event features a number of music (from DJ sets to jazz sessions) and theater shows taking place all over the inner city. Not only stage performances draw attention, but also small street acts. Some of the events are free of charge, others require admission fee. The festival starts on the Friday before July 21 and lasts for 10 days.

Another Ghent’s great festivity is held every three years in September. The Light Festival is a celebration of art of light. The works of international and local light artists and designers illuminate the city streets at night hours involving the audience into a spectacular performance. The show lasts for 4 days only, but attracts thousands of viewers to witness this one-of-a-kind brilliant display.
Held yearly in September, Odegand is another dazzling musical festival. The concerts featuring all possible genres from flamenco to jazz are being performed along Ghent’s quays. The culmination is a great bonfire.

Apart from the numerous festivals Ghent can offer some interesting themed trips within the city and outside. The beer tasting tours introduce the long history of Belgian brewery and let the guests try the best Ghent’s flavors. The World War I related trips illustrate the historic sites of Flanders battlefields and cemeteries.

Ghent can also be explored by bike. Individual rides are possible as well as cycling guided tours. This is an environmentally friendly way of familiarizing with Ghent’s inner city and the vicinities.
