St Martin’s Island
It is a small island in the north eastern part of the Bay of Bengal and it is about 9 km south of the tip of the Cox Bazar-Teknaf peninsula. The first settlement started 250 years fo by some Arabian sailors and they called it Zajira which was changed during the British era to St Martin’s Island. It is in the Chittagong Division of Bangladesh. It is the only coral island in Bangladesh with some famous beaches. The place is clean and peaceful. Between October and April, fishermen from neighbouring areas come to the island temporarily. There is no electricity on the island except the larger hotels run generators for few hours in the evenings. The main tourist season for the area is usually from November to February. It is recommended to keep an eye on the forecast because an occasional cyclone can strike the island during this time. It is possible to reach St Martin’s Island from Cox Bazar by taking a bus or a plane to Teknaf and travellers can cruise to St Martin’s Island from Teknaf which only takes two hours. The main attractions of the island are the village life, Sea Turtle Hatchery, watching sunrise and star and the Rock Beach. Travellers can also try scuba diving at Oceanic Scuba Dive Center.
