It is the main town of Kilinochchi District located in Northern Province of Sri Lanka. It is located at 100 km south east of Jaffna. It used to be the administrative centre and de facto capital of the Tamil Tigers. However in 2009, the troops of the Sri Lankan Army recaptured the city. The world remembers Kilinochchi as a war torn town. After the civil war, the town has gone through an infrastructure transformation. It still has a bit of time to recover like the Jaffna town. There are no main attractions within the city; however the town still carries the traces of the civil war. Therefore, it is possible to visit such landmarks such as water tank, submarine yard etc.
